Wipro says its artificial-intelligence initiatives have generated productivity gains equivalent to the work capacity of approximately 20,000 employees—one of the clearest indications yet of how rapidly AI is changing India’s technology-services industry. But the headline needs an important qualification: Wipro did not say that AI replaced or caused the dismissal of 20,000 employees. Chief Technology Officer Sandhya Arun told Reuters that the capacity created through AI-enabled productivity has been redeployed through measures including moving employees to other projects, retraining them for different roles and allowing engineers to supervise groups of AI agents.
