Therefore, 20,000 employees represents roughly 8.2% of that workforce on a simple headcount-equivalent basis. That comparison helps illustrate the scale of the productivity claim, but it should <strong>not<\/strong> be interpreted as saying 8.2% of Wipro jobs disappeared. Training numbers should not be treated as identical metrics: Wipro&#8217;s annual reporting covers broad GenAI training tiers, while the CTO separately referred to employees receiving advanced AI-related training and certifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did Wipro Lay Off 20,000 Employees Because of AI?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No. There is currently no basis for reporting that Wipro fired 20,000 people because of AI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figure describes estimated <strong>productive capacity<\/strong>. In other words, Wipro says AI-enabled processes allowed work to be completed with enough additional efficiency to represent the output that would otherwise have required roughly 20,000 employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arun explained that this may mean an engineer now supervises several AI agents, moves to another project or trains for another function. At the time, Wipro said all approximately 250,000 employees would receive training in AI fundamentals and responsible AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FY2026: More Than 212,000 Associates Complete GenAI Training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wipro&#8217;s FY2026 reporting says <strong>212,663 associates<\/strong> had completed GenAI training across three tiers: more than 33,000 at the basic level, more than 85,000 at the advanced level and more than 93,000 at the master level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also reported <strong>79.1 skilling hours per associate<\/strong> during FY2026, illustrating the scale of the retraining effort required when AI changes day-to-day delivery work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">April 2026: Wipro Creates an AI-Native Business Unit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 1, Wipro established a dedicated <strong>AI-Native Business &amp; Platforms Unit<\/strong>. The company said the unit would develop enterprise-grade agentic-AI solutions, AI-native business streams and new outcome-based models as the services industry moves toward what Wipro describes as a \u201cservices as software\u201d world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">May\u2013August 2026: Agentic AI Moves Into Enterprise Workflows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wipro subsequently expanded its ServiceNow partnership to introduce agentic-AI workflows into IT, HR, procurement and cybersecurity. In June it launched an Applied AI Center of Excellence for Anthropic&#8217;s Claude models, and in August expanded its Google Cloud partnership around Gemini Enterprise and agentic AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Google Cloud initiative includes plans for more than <strong>10,000 AI-certified specialists<\/strong> and a dedicated pool of more than <strong>1,500 forward-deployed engineers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is a Forward-Deployed Engineer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>forward-deployed engineer (FDE)<\/strong> works close to the customer and combines technical engineering ability with an understanding of the client&#8217;s business processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of simply building a generic AI tool and handing it over, an FDE can work inside the customer environment to understand data, workflows, systems, constraints and business outcomes before configuring or building the required AI solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This role is becoming strategically important because enterprise AI is increasingly less about asking a chatbot questions and more about connecting models with real databases, APIs, policies, workflows and business decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wipro is not alone. TCS has discussed building a forward-deployed engineering organisation of up to <strong>8,900 people<\/strong>, showing how Indian IT services may increasingly compete on embedded AI transformation expertise rather than only large offshore delivery teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Matters for India&#8217;s $315 Billion Technology Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wipro announcement matters beyond one company because the underlying economic model of Indian IT services is changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASSCOM expects India&#8217;s technology sector to exceed approximately <strong>$315 billion in FY2026<\/strong>, with direct employment approaching <strong>6 million people<\/strong>. Its 2026 analysis describes providers shifting away from purely FTE-based delivery toward <strong>outcome-based and risk-sharing commercial structures<\/strong> as AI productivity becomes more material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another NASSCOM study estimates that <strong>20%\u201340% of work across Indian technology organisations<\/strong> is already being done through AI across functions, with customer satisfaction and employee productivity among the leading KPIs organisations track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a fundamental challenge for a sector historically built around large pools of skilled people billed to global customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From \u201cHow Many People?\u201d to \u201cWhat Outcome?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wipro CTO Sandhya Arun highlighted perhaps the most important strategic issue: companies ultimately need to move their AI measurement from <strong>productivity toward business outcomes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saving 30% of the time required to produce code sounds impressive. But if the code creates more defects, needs extensive human review, does not improve customer outcomes or cannot be monetised, the economic value may be much smaller than the productivity figure implies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses therefore need to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Did cycle time fall?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did accepted output increase?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did error rates fall?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much human review does AI-generated work require?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did customer satisfaction improve?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did revenue increase?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did operating margin improve?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Were employees successfully redeployed?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did AI create new products or services?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did security, compliance or operational risk increase?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Missing Number: How Much Revenue Is AI Generating for Wipro?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the Wipro story becomes more nuanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reuters reports that Wipro is currently the only company among India&#8217;s four largest IT-service providers that does not separately disclose AI-specific revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analyst Manoj Chandra Jha of Nord-IQ Research told Reuters that Wipro&#8217;s investment intensity in AI training and partnerships is comparable with peers, but its AI commercialisation is at an earlier stage and still absorbing costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes the next phase particularly important. The real business test is whether large productivity improvements convert into <strong>revenue growth, stronger margins, recurring platform income, customer expansion or new AI-led contracts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HCLTech, for comparison, reported <strong>$171 million of Advanced AI revenue in the June 2026 quarter<\/strong>, up 62.1% year over year. It found that GenAI productivity improvements are real but uneven and that worker-reported time savings have not automatically translated into equivalent gains in measured output, earnings or employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will AI Reduce IT Jobs in India?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI is likely to reduce demand for some tasks and change hiring patterns, but current evidence does not support a simple conclusion that AI will eliminate the Indian IT workforce.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Labour Organization estimates that roughly <strong>one in four jobs worldwide has some degree of exposure to generative AI<\/strong>. Crucially, its assessment says <strong>transformation rather than complete replacement<\/strong> is the more likely outcome for most exposed jobs because many occupations still require human input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Economic Forum&#8217;s Future of Jobs Report estimates that broader labour-market transformation could create <strong>170 million jobs globally by 2030<\/strong> while displacing 92 million, producing a net gain of approximately 78 million jobs. At the same time, around <strong>39% of workers&#8217; existing skills<\/strong> are expected to change or become outdated between 2025 and 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are global forecasts rather than predictions specifically for Wipro or Indian software services. Nevertheless, they support the broader conclusion that the biggest near-term challenge is likely to be <strong>job redesign and skill disruption<\/strong>, not a single moment when AI suddenly eliminates entire professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which IT Tasks Are Most Likely to Change?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI is particularly suited to tasks that are digital, repetitive, information-heavy and easy to evaluate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within technology and business services, this can include parts of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>code generation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>code refactoring;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unit-test creation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>software documentation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>knowledge retrieval;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ticket classification;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>routine technical support;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>data extraction;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>report summarisation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>quality checks;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>workflow coordination;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proposal preparation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>research assistance; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>internal administrative processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But automating parts of a job is not automatically equivalent to automating the entire occupation.
